Wow...

I've been so lazy. Lazy about a lot of things, but one of the biggest is keeping up with keeping up!

The point of this blog was to keep up with what was going on with me as an actress...so I guess you can see how things have been going, huh?

Somewhere along the way, I decided to take on regular work, which is the antithesis of being an arteeest, right? Well, I'm actually pretty happy about my decision because the regular 9-5 has allowed me to keep my head above water during this financial downturn.

It's not that I'm not still thinking about it though.

To be honest, I need to get out of my own way. Time ticks away everyday and the regrets just grow bigger and bigger and bigger. It's time to put it all out there, but this time not give up or start listening to all those voices telling me that it might not happen.

So, as things go along, this blog may become less about the trials and tribulations of me and my struggle in the industry and more about me and my struggle as an individual. Should be interesting, right?

Oh, and a huge shout out to my good friend and inspiration, Jason Rogel, who's new indie feature length film, Splinterheads, is showing at the Maui Film Festival!

The Landlord

Last night, Vonyse and I went to a screening of the 1970's movie, The Landlord. The movie was being presented by director John Singleton as a part of an AFI series.

Vonyse, John and Ruth

Marki and RuthMuch to the audience's surprise and delight, Marki Bey, who played Laine in the movie, was in attendance. We spoke with her afterward and she was delightful and funny. It was an honor just to meet her.

Readjustment

Well, it's been almost a week since returning from Paris and I think I finally have my head screwed on right. The jet-lag wasn't that bad, but I was walking around in a fog for a few days there.

I came back feeling really motivated and feeling like the sky is the limit...so being back at home is all about sustaining that feeling. In Paris we walked everywhere, didn't watch tv at all, and just really enjoyed our surrounding. And being at the festival with so many creative people was amazing. With this new found fire, I'm really motivated to work on a screenplay. I'm working [and reworking] the storyline and making a plan to get this done.

And speaking of motivation and new found fire, director Amber Sharp has a 90-day goal to get her series, Don't Go on the air. To see the challenge and how you can help, check out the website.

Paris!

Great news! Triple Minority will be showing at the 19th edition of the Paris International Lesbian & Feminist Film Festival at the end of the month.

Even better news, Vonyse and I will be in attendance! Yes, that means we are going to Paris, France for the festival! I'm so excited, I can't even tell you. I'm so looking forward to this.

Along with that, there is a showing of In Disbelief at the BHERC African American Film Marketplace this weekend. So if you can't get to Paris for the Triple Minority screening, this one is in our own backyard.

This weekend, I made a trip down to San Diego for the SD Asian Film Festival's screening of 'Potluck'. Two good friends of mine, Jason Rogel and Ellen Williams were a part of this funny film...I am really proud of them. Congratulations on great work everyone!

I'd Just Like To Thank...

Awards season is in full swing here in LA. The Grammy's are this weekend and the Oscars are right around the corner. Like most people, I try to make Oscar predictions and I'd like to think I'm pretty good...regardless if I've seen the movie or not.

I'm pretty excited for the Oscars. There are so many movies that I haven't seen yet! 'The Last King of Scotland' is high on the list...Forest looks amazing in it. As is 'Volver', 'The Departed' and 'The Queen'. I'm thinking about taking AMC up on their offer of $30 for the 5 best picture nominees. We'll see...

Also, I'm excited for the Pan African Film Festival, which is taking place in my own backyard! There just aren't enough weekends!

Somebody In Finland Is Talking About Me

Triple Minority director, Amber Sharp, sent this link to me today. I'm totally excited that the movie will be shown in Finland, but I have no idea what it says! Anyone out there speak Finnish?

So, I just checked out Triple Minority on the Logo website and was surprised to find that not only has the movie been viewed over 1600 times, we are the top ranked short overall! 5 stars for everyone! Logo has also added an interview with writer/director Amber Sharp, so if you haven't seen it, check that out.

The film has also been added to two more film festivals occuring next month, in Dallas, TX and Long Island, NY. Links to both festivals can be found on my Myspace page. If you live in the area, please check it out...and feedback is always welcome!
